This lesson is about preparation, not fear. The Constitution protects people, not only citizens: the rights to remain silent and to be free from unreasonable searches apply to everyone physically in the United States. Families in mixed-status households feel safer when everyone knows those rights and has a simple plan, the same way families plan for fire drills they hope never to need.
