What this site is
KidsKnowRights is a youth-led nonprofit organization that publishes free legal-literacy education for young people, families, and schools. It is not a law firm, and nobody here is acting as your attorney. Everything on this site is general educational information.
By using this site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site. If you are under 18, please read these terms with a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult.
No legal advice, and no attorney-client relationship
Nothing on this site is legal advice about your situation, and reading it, printing a card, completing a lesson, or talking with the assistant does not create an attorney-client relationship with anyone. Laws vary enormously by state, by age, by school district, and by the exact facts, and they change over time.
If something is actually happening to you, talk with a trusted adult and, where it matters, a licensed attorney or a free legal aid organization. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911.
Review status is shown, not implied
Every lesson, scenario, card, and article on this site displays whether it has been reviewed by a legal professional or is still awaiting that review. Most of it is awaiting review, and we say so on the page rather than hiding it. Nothing is ever marked as professionally reviewed automatically: a named administrator has to record who reviewed it and when.
Some drafts on this site were first written with the help of an AI tool and then edited by a person. Those are labelled as such, permanently, on the page itself. An AI tool cannot publish anything here and cannot mark anything as reviewed.
The assistant
The assistant is an automated tool. It is not a lawyer, it does not know your situation, and it answers only by pointing at educational content already published on this site. It will decline to answer questions about your own case, and it will not guess at a legal answer. Please do not type your name, address, school, immigration status, medical information, or the details of a real case into it.
To keep it available to everyone, the assistant is rate-limited. Automated or abusive use may be blocked.
Optional accounts
An account is never required. If you create one, keep your password to yourself, use a username that is not your full real name, and tell us if you think someone else has access to it. We may suspend or remove an account that is used to attack the site or to harass anyone. You can delete your account and all of its progress at any time from the Your progress page.
Points and progress exist only to help you keep track of your own learning. They are not a score, not a ranking, and not visible to anyone else. There is nothing to buy on this site, no subscription, and no payment of any kind.
Using and sharing our materials
You may read, print, and share the lessons, scenarios, rights cards, and articles on this site for personal, classroom, family, and community education, free of charge. Please keep them intact and credited to KidsKnowRights, including the educational disclaimer and the creator credit that appear with them. Please do not sell them, present them as your own, or edit them in a way that changes what they say about the law.
The KidsKnowRights name, logo, illustrations, and design are ours and are not covered by that permission. Links to outside organizations are provided because we think they help; we do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content.
Acceptable use
Please do not use this site to harass anyone, to attempt to break into any part of it, to scrape it automatically at a scale that affects other readers, or to do anything unlawful. We may block access that does any of those things.
No warranty, and limits on liability
We work hard to keep this material accurate and current, and we cannot promise that it is complete, correct for your state, or up to date at the moment you read it. The site is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, KidsKnowRights and the people who work on it are not liable for decisions made or actions taken based on anything published here.
That is not a way of avoiding responsibility for the quality of the work. It is the honest limit of what a free educational website can promise about the law in fifty different states.

We may update these terms, and the date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. If you spot something in our materials that is wrong, out of date, or unclear, please tell us — corrections from readers are one of the most useful things we receive.
