一再落空的申请

The situation

You have been diagnosed with a condition that makes timed tests very hard. In September your teacher said, kindly, "Of course, just remind me before each test." Sometimes it works. Twice you reminded her and there was no extra time anyway, and last week a substitute did not know about it at all. It is now November and your grades are dropping for reasons that have nothing to do with what you know.

你可以怎么做?

Pick a response to see how it usually plays out.

The general principles

  • Section 504 covers a broader group of students than special education does, and produces accommodations rather than specialized instruction.
  • A written, dated request is what starts the timelines a school has to meet.
  • A documented plan binds the whole school, including substitutes and next year's teachers.

Safer next steps

  1. Write down the dates when the accommodation did not happen. Specifics carry the conversation.
  2. Ask the office who the school's 504 coordinator is.
  3. Have a parent or guardian email a dated request for an evaluation, and keep a copy.
  4. Ask for any refusal in writing, along with the appeal process.

Where you live matters

Federal law sets the floor; states and districts add their own procedures and timelines on top of it.

Bring in a trusted adult

Most of these rights are formally held by a parent or guardian until a student turns eighteen, so bringing an adult in is not just support here, it is how the process works. Your state's parent center can explain the steps for free.
